Weekend Football Summary

Junior Championship Colemanstown A Team 1 – 1 Corofin Utd.  Our A team earned a 2-2 draw at home to Corofin on Sunday in the league. It was the visitors who wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as they took an early lead on 20mins with a free kick from the edge of the box which was riffled into the top corner, leaving Junior in goal with no chance. However, Colemanstown battled through a tightly contested 1st half to get themselves right back into the match, as they moved the ball about to good effect. This paid dividends as Geordan Kenny restored parity when he scored from just inside the box. Colemanstown though got on plenty of ball, pushed forward with great movement from Kerrill Hardiman, Richie Lally & Kevin Barrett around the middle of the field involving Dean Connaire & Geordan Kenny on the left flank. We created several meaningful chances but were unable to take the lead. We conceded again, this time through a penalty as the visitors went in at the break with a slim advantage 2-1 up. The second half saw Colemanstown ramp up the pressure with Padraig Quirke & Josh Brennan introduced as 2nd half subs. Colemanstown created plenty more chances but were unable to convert as Corofin were fierce resilient at the back & they pulled off a few goal line saves to keep Colemanstown out. Colemanstown changed formation which also coincided with the introduction of Harry Mitchell who partnered Callum McKelvey up front. This brought more direct play from our lads. Colemanstown finally found the equaliser with 7mins left on the clock as Kerrill Hardiman skipped through from the centre, only to be upended in the box & Callum McKelvey made no mistake with the resultant penalty take. Colemanstown saw out the remainder of the game with great determination as they pushed forward on every opportunity but were unable to find the elusive winner, although they forced several corners in the last few minutes as the match ended in a hard-fought draw.  Match report: Martina Donnellan

U17 Girls Championship. Colemanstown 2 – 4 Barna na Forbacha. Colemanstown U17 girls started strong at home on Sunday but really settled into the game after a water break half way through the first half ! We had most of the chances but just couldn’t capitalise ! Thankfully on the 40th min after a great ball from Laoise Maybin, Libby Kennedy grabbed the opener. The girls reset at half time and within 2 mins of the 2nd half a lovely run by Libby Kennedy saw the ball land to Grace Mitchell who from a tight angle grabbed our 2nd ! The girls kept trying to push for more but Bearna defence tightened up. Bearna went on the attack and our defence ran the ball out of the box and controversially the ref called a handball against us & Bearna slotted it home. Both teams kept pushing for more and more and unfortunately Bearna capitalised with 3 goals in the last 15mins. The girls kept pushing but the Bearna defence were rock solid in the end. Player of the match went to Annalise Doran who was brilliant in defence all day. Final score from Colemanstown. Colemanstown 2 – 4 Barna na Forbacha.   Match report: Laura Parker.

U15 Girls Championship. Colemanstown 4 – 8 Athenry: Championship.  The goals flowed in Colemanstown on Sunday in a remarkable game which saw Colemanstown U15s & Athenry evenly matched in the first half as both teams broke at half time 3-3. Emily Rohan was star of the show having claimed a hatrick. In fact the Colemanstown girls were 3-2 up approaching half time but Athenry grabbed the equaliser just before the break. Leah O’Connor, Roisin Keague, & Emma Collins all had first half chances but were not far off the mark while Ruby Lynch had a super first half between the sticks.  Athenry emerged the stronger side from the restart with 2 quickfire goals in almost as many minutes set Colemanstown back a bit. In another burst Athenry added a 3rd, their 6th in total but the Colemanstown supremo Emily Rohan again pulled one back to make it 6-4 to Athenry. While one felt that rate of shooting couldn’t continue, 2 more Athenry strikes before full time earned the visitors an 8-4 win. That said Colemanstown matched Athenry in many positions & the scoreline didn’t really do justice to the game. Ashling Ruane, Shauna McDonagh, Niamh Naughton & Leah O’Connor were steady all through while Roisin Keague, Rachel Kennedy, Emma Collins, Grace Connolly, Eimear Schwitalla, Liliana King, Cara Gibbons & Roisin O’Dea got on plenty of ball & Tia Loughnane & the goal assassin Emily Rohan combined well up top.
