Our under 14s took on a Premier League team St Francis from Athlone in the Connacht Cup on Saturday on a very wet and windy day in Athlone. The boys carved out a fantastic 1-0 victory over the midlanders with a much depleted team on the day due to illness. Opting to play against the wind in the first half, the back four of Daniel Masterson, Davin Costello, Brian Monaghan and Brian Connolly had a busy half with Sean Murray making an excellent save late into the half to leave the score 0-0 at half time.
Colemanstown started the second half brilliantly with Lorcan Molloy and Ronan O Neill working hard and setting up some great chances for Kieran Dowd and Darragh Murphy. The wingers of Conor O Neill and Stephen Kelly had a great game putting St Francis on the back foot throughout the game. With fifteen
minutes gone, Ronan O Neill picked the ball up in the centre of the pitch, looked up and saw St. Francis’ goalkeeper off his line and then he lobbed the keeper from the half way line to score a brilliant goal to put Colemanstown 1-0 up. For the final half of the second half, St Francis put our boys under pressure but the lads dug deep to carve out the win. Final score 1-0. The boys now look forward to a next round quarter final tie in the Connacht Cup. Many thanks to all the parents who travelled on the day.
