Colemanstown’s U13 girls squad travelled to Loughrea bright and early Sunday morning for our 2nd league game against newly promoted Loughrea. We knew this was going to be a stiff test considering Loughrea had cruised through Division 2 last season, and only conceeded 4 goals along the way. True to form Loughrea came out of the traps the quickest and had the Colemanstown back four of Grace Connolly, Kate Mitchell, Aoife Walsh and Niamh Naughton under severe pressere from the off.
They opened the scoring after 10 minutes, adding a second goal five minutes later. Great credit must go to the Colemanstown girls who found another gear for the remainder of the half, camping out in the Loughrea half. Half chances fell to Emma Collins down the left wing and Tia Loughlane in the middle of midfield, but both chances went wide of the posts.
The pressure on the Loughrea goal was relentless for the final few minutes of the 1st half with Emily Rohan delivering four corners in a row straight into the box. Somehow Colemanstown couldn’t find the net in what would have been a well deserved goal.
Credit must go to Loughrea who had some fine players on their side and were clinical in front of goal. They added a third ten minutes into the second half with a well taken chip over Lucy Butler in goals. The girls in green never gave up, with Emily Rohan hitting the crossbar from a long rang effort and newly signed Grace Jordon working tirelessly up front. It was game set and match after Loughrea found the net for a fourth time with ten minutes remaining. Next up for the girls is Craughwell United away on Sunday week.
