Our u14’s were not too far below the required performance against a strong Salthill outfit in their latest league encounter played under lights in Drom on Friday night. Salthill were rewarded for their early dominance but not until the 20th minute with a well taken goal which left Daniel Glynn in the Colemanstown goal with no chance. Salthill scored again almost straight from the kick-off as Adam Wynne who was impressive all through, on this occasion was dispossessed rather easily and their striker raced forward to score their second to leave it 2-0 at the break. The pacey Alan Naughton found himself in on goal on a few occasions in the first half but the Salthill custodian stood his ground well. Colemanstown faced an uphill second half but some dogged determination by our lads in the second half coupled with some last-ditch defending brought us more into the game. Adam Wynne brought Colemanstown right back into it when he scored as good a goal you would see anywhere with a fine free kick after Shane Burke was taken down. He whipped the ball perfectly over the wall and deceived the defenders and keeper with a curling strike into the top corner. For the last 10mins it was all Colemanstown as they completely dominated in search of an equaliser. They came close through Shane Loughrey but a great diving save from Salthill’s No.1 saved their day. Minutes later Shane Loughrey played a beauty through to Alan Naughton but the ball went agonisingly to the right of the post. Immediately up the other end, what seemed a pretty harmless attack for Salthill in the dying minutes almost ended up in Salthill scoring a third as a simple clearance was messed up and Salthill failed to score in an open goal. Final score: Colemanstown 1; Salthill Devon 2. Meanwhile our B team slumped to a 2-0 defeat in their league tie on Saturday against Athenry. They were left to reflect on another frustrating performance on a day when Joe Finnerty was also dismissed on a straight red. Next weekend‘s fixtures: u12’s play Salthill Devon at home on Saturday morning. KO 10.30am; Reserves also play Salthill at home on Saturday, KO 2pm while the B team hope to get back on winning ways when they play Corrib Celtic in Annaghdown also on Saturday. KO 2pm.
