U14 Girls SFAI Cup. Colemanstown 1 – 2 Athenry. Fielding with a largely depleted squad but for large periods of this game, it was difficult to decipher who was the Championship side & who was the Div1 team. For the second week in succession, our young lassies put in an excellent performance with both sides having an equal share of possession. Athenry played with the breeze in the 1st half & created a few more clear cut chances than Colemanstown but Lucy Butler was rock solid in goals & pulled of some remarkable saves. Athenry opened their account 10mins before the break with good work from their No. 7, who was a thorn in our side for the entire game & her delivery into the box was tapped in from close range. Half chances fell to Shauna McDonagh & Tia Loughnane but Athenry did enough to put a halt to the attacks. 1-0 to Athenry at the break. From the outset of the 2nd half, Colemanstown restarted strong & dominated possession & threatened on goal through Emma Collins & Leah Hansberry but just couldn’t find the equaliser. Midway through the 2nd half, Athenry capitalised on a rare defensive error when a cross into the box wasn’t cleared & Athenry tapped in at the back post. With 10mins to go, Colemanstown pulled 1 back through an Emily Rohan free from 25yards, won by her cousin Maddie Rohan. The last 10mins saw a great battle as Colemanstown put in some shift to try to restore parity. Maddie Rohan & Grace Jordan had chances late on but the Athenry custodian was on top of her game. In the end, time ran out but it was a super effort by all the squad. Match report: Martina Donnellan
