It took a 3-0 win on penalties after 110 minutes of an absorbing tie for Colemanstown to finally quash West Utd on Sunday last to advance to meet neighbours Athenry at home in the next round of the Connaught Cup. This was a nip and tuck affair in the ‘A’ teams first post-Christmas encounter and indeed any turkey signs were well shaken off at the end of this game between two teams that have little between them in terms of points in the current league table. The game ended 4-4 after 90 mins with the instrumental Tom Flannery claiming a hat-trick and Ray Moran netting Colemanstown’s 4th. Stephen Walsh was superb up front and combined well with Tom Flan setting up 3 of the 4 goals. Richie Lally, Gareth Lally & Damian Wynne were a class act in the middle of the park. 20 minutes of extra time failed to produce a winner for either team and so to penalties. It can be a lonely walk from the centre circle to the penalty spot but for Richie Lally, Ronan Geraghty & Tom Flannery they despatched their attempts with ease past the West keeper. Alan Finn enhanced his goalkeeping reputation and was the Colemanstown hero in the shoot-out as he dived superbly to the butt of the post to save two of the penalties whilst West’s other spot kick hit the post but again Finn guessed correctly in his full length stretch. Colemanstown are currently showing great quality in the squad as they continue to progress and are playing with a great will to win. So roll on Sun 26th Jan as they take on the mighty Athenry in the 4th round of the Connaught Cup.
