Our reserves had certainly planned to come out of the blocks faster than their opponents Colga and score first and keep scoring as that’s exactly what they did. They were the hungrier side and their 5-2 drubbing of Colga at home on Saturday now mean they sit 2nd in the Reserve league table over the winter break. Gerry Grady deserved a private jet back to Castleblakney after his hat-trick to make it 11 goals in total for him this season to date. Shane Bailey opening Colemanstown’s rout on 10mins after great work from Grady on the endline who passed back to Bailey who whipped on the ball first time to find the net. Our 2nd came soon after as newcomer Leo Morrissey went on a run through the middle like a zetor tractor, easily slipping by one defender only to be hacked down by another in the box for a clear cut peno. Ger Grady confidently stepped up and dispatched the resultant spot kick with ultimate ease. Our 3rd goal was pure class as Ger Grady got on the end of some good passing play out of defence and with the audacity to shoot from midfield as he spotted the keeper off his line, he was even applauded by the opposition such was the greatness of his wonderful finish. Bailey also had another effort in the net in the first half but was deemed to be offside while Adrian Queeney went close smashing the ball off the crossbar following a corner. Colga got 1 back before the break through a long ball over the top which their striker ran on to and finished well to leave the score 3-1 at the interval. Early in the 2nd half, we pounced again as Fearghal Flannery softened the goal cushion a bit more when he scored a great individual goal as he cleverly rounded 3 defenders and drilled the ball low to the right of the hapless keeper. At this stage our lads were on a mission and our 5th came as Daniel Masterson worked the ball nicely up the wing and crossed to Ger Grady whose near post header found the net and so there were smiles all round before he had to depart 20mins into the 2nd half to go to his Christmas party where the bubbly was held on ice for him!. Colga got 1 back before the 90mins to put a bit more respect on the scoreline. This was a squad effort as everyone played their part well including veteran Garry O’Grady, Kenny Duane, Daniel Masterson, Cian O’Toole & Ronan Carr. Our rearguard of Stephen Rabbitt, Niall Rohan & Eoghan Barrett were rarely rattled as Garry Lally had little to do in goals. Niall Cunningham & Conor O’Neill did great work threading up and down the wings as Adrian Queeney, Leo Morrissey & Fearghal Flan did plenty of donkey work in midfield. Gerry Grady stole the show with his hat trick while Bailey’s exquisite football brain came to the fore on plenty of occasions. A nice break over Christmas should revitalise these lads who now sit 2nd in the table with West in pole position.
