The recent hoodoo held by Mervue over a Colemanstown team continued in Mervue on Saturday as a solitary goal was the difference between these 2 sides for their early morning kick off. So near and yet so far! The first half was a dull enough affair. 0-0 at the break as the only first half chances to Colemanstown fell to Mika Harun & Shane Burke. The game quickly came to life in the second half as Mervue scored 10mins after the restart when their striker broke from midfield and finished his one-on-one effort well past the hapless Colemanstown custodian Jason Fahy. Mervue turned the screw 3mins later when a free kick lobbed into the box was tapped to the net by the opportunistic striker. Colemanstown got one back towards the end with a beautiful strike from distance by Jason Keane which the keeper almost got his fingertips to but the power of the shot was enough to whizz it past the keeper. Right at the death Colemanstown were denied a penalty after a blatant foul on Thady Moran and indeed Moran who is normally ruthless in front of goal missed a hatful of second half chances. Mika Harun had a last gasp chance to grasp an equaliser from a corner but Mika Harun’s effort with some fancy footwork was wide of the target. The players may have been disappointed with this result especially Josh Brennan, Ethan Lally, Aaron Molly & Thady Moran who were particularly to the fore and also missing regular striker and top scorer to date Kellie Brennan who is currently undergoing trials with the u12 girls. They have a chance to get back on winning ways when they play neighbours St. Bernard’s in Abbeyknockmoy on Saturday next at 10.30am.
