Our U17Boys were eliminated from the FAI Youth cup on Sunday following a 2-0 away loss to Mervue. Colemanstown were always under pressure in this game and probably wobbled a bit. The hosts were in charge for much of the proceedings and Colemanstown found it hard at times to get going. The first real chance to either side fell on 12mins when Tiarnan Proulx sent in a beauty for Jonah Donnellan to chase but he couldn’t stretch far enough to get on the end of it. While straight from the kick out, Mervue broke on the counter and Fionn Flattery was forced to make a super one handed save. The deadlock was broken on the quarter hour mark when Fionn took down the striker in a one-on-one effort and immediately the ref pointed to the spot. Fionn Flattery stretched well to make the stop but the Mervue lads were lining up for the rebound to tap home the opener on a stranded Fionn Flattery in goals. They quickly added a 2nd on 22mins when space opened up in the middle of the field and a splendid piledriver from 30 yards even Our Lord himself wouldn’t have stopped it. On 30mins some nice combination play, culminated in a Shane Duffy effort which was well saved by the keeper. 2-0 at the break.
The 2nd half continue in the same vein as the Colemanstown lads found it hard to get going as many of their threatened attacks were broken down by a powerful Mervue rearguard. There wasn’t much to shout about from the Colemanstown supporters in the 2nd half apart from two half chances from Rodgie as Fionn Flattery was by far the busier of the keepers. That said the Colemanstown lads were still breathing approaching the home straight but in truth Mervue showed the superiority they had demonstrated for the whole game. Final score: Mervue 2 – 0 Colemanstown
