Corrib Celtic moved 3 points clear at the top of the table with a commanding display against Colemanstown in the U14 Div 1 league played at home yesterday afternoon. Cilly Fahey & Jason Rabbitte had early chances as the ball was taken off the latter’s toe just as he was about to strike and then Cian Ruane had to come to the edge of his box to gather a dangerous looking through ball and made another quick double save from Corrib Celtic’s No. 9.
The breakthrough was made by Colemanstown on 16mins after a good run down the flank by Killy Hughes who played Jayo Rabbitte in the corner and his delivery found the left boot of David Walsh who drilled the ball past the stranded keeper. On the 20minute mark a half clearance from the visitors was headed back into the box where the sliding Cilly Fahey did his best to poke the ball home but it went agonisingly the wrong side of the post.
A great combined effort by keeper Cian Ruane and centre back Luke Williams kept Corrib Celtic from equalising on 29mins as Corrib Celtic upped their game. Immediately on the resumption, a back header from Ciarán Keating saw their No. 11 nip in to round Cian Ruane in goals and tap into an empty net. Just on the stroke of half time a fine long range effort from well outside the box from No. 11 again saw Cian Ruane leap to tip the ball over but the force of the effort carried the ball well over the line to put Corrib Celtic in the driving seat for the 2nd half.
Cian Ruane denied Corrib Celtic with three world class saves within 10mins of the restart as it looked like the visitors lifted their game a notch or two. Corrib Celtic scored their 3rd 12mins into the 2nd half as they broke in the centre and the delivery into the 6’ box found the head of a sole black jersey in a box crowded in green and his header found the net. At this stage, one would have to admit that Corrib Celtic were stringing together an eye catching performance led at the back by their towering Pedro!
Colemanstown seemed to be having a tough day in the Autumnal sunshine as Corrib Celtic found a 4th. At this stage, they were snapping into tackles and pegging back the Colemanstown lads. The visitors swept in a 5th when they chipped Cian Ruane during a real golden phase of soccer for them 26mins into the 2nd half. Colemanstown had half a chance when David Walsh floated in a free kick and Luke Willams was the last boot to try to poke it past the vigilant keeper who got it into his safe hands.
By now, the Colemanstown management duo had emptied the bench with Ross Lally, Gary Gill, Nathan McGuire-Greaney, Eoin Keague, Jonathan Keane & Diarmuid Ryan introduced. The visitors saw out the game in style as they added two more before the death while Diarmuid Ryan clawed one back for Colemanstown from close range to close out a tough game as Corrib Celtic refused to crumble once they found the ascendancy.
