Beep Beep! A new record!! Colemanstown beat a Mervue side for the first time in many years in Mervue this morning and it took our under 11’s to crack the spell in the U11 Development league. Colemanstown fielded 2 teams; an ‘A’ & ‘B’ team who were superb and thoroughly deserved their 3 victories and 1 draw. Both our teams played 2 games with roll on, roll off subs ensuring everyone had plenty of time on the ball. Missing a few regulars through holidays and illness we fielded 2 teams as follows: Team ‘A’ – Racheal Greally, Anthony Feeney, Patrick Flynn, Diarmuid Ryan, Conor Laffey, Ross Lally, Fionn Flattery, Jonah Donnellan, Adam Cleary. Team ‘B’ – Eanna Burke, Killian Hughes, Ciaran Keating, Tommy Mellody, Cian Ruane, Larry Muravjovs, Eoin Keague, Sean Connolly, Cathal Kennedy.
Team ‘A’ : In the first game, they found themselves 1-0 down at half time playing against the fall. Adam Cleary opened the scoring with a brilliant goal from 25yards out when he chipped the keeper. Immediately from the kick off Jonah Donnellan followed up with a sublime goal from almost the half way line. Jonah scored his 2nd with another drive from distance after good work in defence from Diarmuid Ryan and Adam Cleary & Patrick Flynn in midfield. Mervue pulled 1 back before the final whistle when the ball took a deflection. Final score 3-2. In their second game Anthony Feeney opened the scoring after Fionn Flattery first drew a great save from the Mervue keeper but Anthony made no mistake with the rebound. It was no more than he deserved, having come close on more than a few occasions. Adam Cleary scored No. 2 after displaying some great footwork near the sideline, skipped forward and shot a great effort from distance which eluded the keeper to find the net. Mervue got 1back early in the 2nd half but then Anthony Feeney widened the gap again with a great individual whopping goal from 25yards into the top right corner. Mervue pulled one back again with a curling corner effort which went all the way to the net and scored again just before the full time whistle to leave the final score 3-3. Thanks to Jason Finn & Robbie Parker for their efforts in managing this team.
Team ‘B’ : In the first game they were 1-0 up at half time thanks to a splendid goal from Thomas Mellody better known to his teammates as ‘Tommy’. In the 2nd half he scored again as he ran onto the ball and the class striker struck a first time shot to make it 2-0 and so that’s how it finished. Cian Ruane continued his flying form from last week as he made some superb saves in goal. Killian Hughes & Larry Muravjovs were fiercely determined in defence. In their second game, they also looked dangerous although they found themselves 2 goals down early on. Tommy Mellody was on the mark again showing powerful pace scoring 2 goals in quick succession to square up the game. Ciaran Keating scored just before half time to edge us 3-2 in front for the half time break. In the 2nd half that lad again Tommy Mellody popped up, showed great calmness on the ball in maintaining possession and scored his 3rd of this game to claim his hat trick and 5th of the 2 game series. 4-2 it finished. Thanks to Gary Lally & Lee Murphy for their stewardship.
Both teams were well balanced and superbly ambitious. It is great to get a win over Mervue any time but to get 3 victories and a draw will be acceptable on a platter any day.
Our depleted reserves had a day they would rather forget in a while losing 7-2 to a more superior West Utd outfit at home also today. Shane Bailey & Padraig Quirke scored the Colemanstown goals.
