The second leg of the Colemanstown vs Salthill Devon reserve league tie produced the exact same result as the first leg with another goal feast; 8 in total (4 apiece) & more importantly a share of the spoils in Drom today. Despite a number of regulars missing through injury, unavailability and other commitments, Colemanstown put out a fairly strong side made up of a blend of experience and youth and went home disappointed that they didn’t take all 3 points on offer. Colemanstown were 1-0 up after 5mins thanks to a well taken Ronnie Geraghty penalty after Squelchy was floored in the box; his 4th goal in as many games. Salthill equalised within 5 mins but then Colemanstown took over thanks in the main to a solid and powerful performance from our defence and midfielders who made some brilliant challenges and generated great play throughout the field. Colemanstown’s dominance saw them go 4-1 up early in the second half thanks to three Shane Bailey goals; two headers and a cracking left footed volley. At this stage Colemanstown had taken over completely as their standard of play continued to improve. But then they sat back a bit and suddenly Salthill had fought their way back into the game. They scored a scrappy soft 2nd goal while their 3rd resulted from a well taken header from a corner and all of a sudden it was ‘game on’. The hard work put in by the home side in their fight back paid dividends when they scored the equaliser with 8mins left on the clock as they scored from close range when the ball broke from a goalmouth scramble. It was a game in which net minder for the day Gary Lally & the entire team were left wondering how a 4-1 lead was relinquished. Still it was a good run out and for some a day to get rid of the cobwebs! Despite the 4-4 draw, Shane Bailey’s hat-trick contribution can’t go unmentioned as he pulled the strings throughout the game.
