When the beleaguered Kinvara keeper saved Shane Bailey’s 88th-minute effort, he not only denied Shane Bailey a double hat-trick but also I’m sure a place in Colemanstown soccer club’s history as the first player to score six goals in a single game. Even with that, I’m not great on records and am open to correction but Shane Bailey must have gone in to the archive books for Colemanstown today. He was the most destructive player on view scoring 5 goals and helped Colemanstown ‘B’ to their biggest margin of victory this season and maybe their biggest win ever. It was all the more sweeter as Kinvara came in to this game unbeaten todate. Bailey’s goals saw him score a mix; with his head, his boot and an emphatic volley which will live long in the memory. The wheels were set in motion 10mins in as Bailey’s first goal was a low hard drive from the edge of the box quickly followed by that exquisite volley which was first superbly controlled with his chest and volleyed from 20yards. Kinvara got 1 back to make it 2-1 when they headed home a corner at the back post. Colemanstown scored their 3rd as a Bailey header was fumbled and later scrambled by the keeper but when the ball crosses the white line any striker will be happy with that. Just after the restart Stephen Broderick emulated his brother Gary’s antics which produced a red card for him a few weeks back but this time Stephen managed to stay on the field, as a deliberate hand ball saw the resultant penalty dispatched easily. 3-2 it was and suddenly there was greater expectations and pressure on Colemanstown to deliver a bit more. Bailey pricked his ears, rose to the task and there was no overshadowing him, 2 more second half goals, one a driving header from a Martin Walsh corner and his 5th which he drove in to the bottom corner after great work from Sean Walsh. With Colemanstown coasting Keith Donnellan had a chance towards the end to add to this goal feast but he was caught by the swimming togs and hailed down while the resultant free kick failed to bring any reward. Right at the death Baileys effort for his 6th was saved to deny him a double hat-trick but I’d imagine this will not be a result he’ll forget. Tom Loftus was ‘lofty’ in his efforts, playing a stormer while Kerrill Lally, Steven Broderick & Martin Walsh showed no panic as they knew Bailey was on fire. And although assistant B team manager Ross Sullivan had enough on his mind after popping the question to the love of his life, Trisha Burke, mid-week and then preparing to attend the Ireland vs Australia rugby match on Saturday (and what a game that was) he still took the time to come live by satellite to Colemanstown (via Linda Broderick) to catch up with the happenings of his beloved ‘B’ team. We congratulate both Ross & Trisha on their engagement as 3D plans for the wedding cake are already drawn up. It’s great when quality time with your girlfriend really does pay dividends! However, you’d have to finish this post with Bailey, whose quintuple puts him in the history books with a mighty striking rampage.
