Burke’s Bar Colemanstown is celebrating 125 years in business this September. The public house, Post Office and local shop is currently run by Frank Burke and his wife Bernie. This business has been in the Burke family since 1889 when Frank’s grandfather Ulick bought the premises for £240. The letter dating 3rd Sept 1889 showing the transaction is currently displayed in the bar. Frank’s father Sonny took on running the business and Frank then took over from his mother Kathleen.
On the first weekend in September the Burke family are marking this milestone, 125th Anniversary, with a weekend of celebrations. The party weekend starts on Friday 5th September with the Burke family kindly sponsoring a fundraising table quiz for Colemanstown F.C. The table quiz starts at 9pm, €20 per table of 4, all funds raised from the Table Quiz will be used for the development of further facilities at Colemanstown United F.C. Lots of fun and raffle also on the night, all are welcome to attend so we urge all players and supporters to please come along and support.
Saturday’s celebrations are kick started with a trip to Cregmore Golf course where the avid golfer can take part in a competition kindly organised by Colemanstown Golf Society on behalf of the Burke family with the Burke’s sponsoring the prizes on the day. Non-members are very welcome to play in this event and names can be given to Bernie Burke at 090-9677084 or any member of the Golf Society Committee.
Saturday afternoon sees a host of activities in the garden including an inflatable human foosball table, gladiator games and bouncing castle. The Kings of Connacht are playing outdoors from 8pm and the party continues right throughout the night with a BBQ and music later in the lounge with DJ Martin.
On Sunday there is a threshing display following the All-Ireland hurling final. A strongest man competition involving sheaf throwing and half hundred weight throwing will be held later in the day. Who wants to claim this title and maybe hold it forever more?? Music provided by Simon Ryan with a BBQ to feed all the hungry competitors and their supporters.
The Burke family would like to welcome everyone to join with them in the celebrations over the weekend and would like to say thank you to all their customers over the years. For further updates regarding the weekend events please see Burke’s Bar Facebook Page.
We in Colemanstown United are deeply appreciative of the outstanding support from the Burke Family since the clubs foundation in 1982 to the present day. We are forever indebted to Frank & Bernie Burke for the donation of their field to the club, on which we have built the fine facility, pitch, training grounds & clubhouse which exists today. Their generosity has enabled hundreds of players through the years to don the green & white of the club. On behalf of those players, both past & present, we say a big ‘thank you’ and sincerely congratulate the Burke family on this huge milestone – the celebration of their 125th birthday. Roll on the festivities to celebrate….
