Almost all of us have seen that film when Superman seems to arrive out of nowhere and come to the rescue….. Well Sean Murray did just that on Sunday last when he saved 2 out of 4 penalty shots to enable Colemanstown advance over Tuam Celtic in this first round Cup tie. Colemanstown opened impressively but failed to seize any goals with Keith Murphy, Paul Lally & Brian Sweeney coming closest early on. 10 minutes before the break, Tuams first and only attack of the half resulted in a well worked & well taken goal to make it 1 nil to Tuam at the interval. Colemanstown’s youngsters were a completely different force after the break, playing with far more urgency & width and clearly stirred by Sir Bobby’s words at the break. Aidan Monaghan & Keith Connell linked up well to feed Daniel Masterson on the flanks and with great footwork & tenacity cut inside & struck the ball from all of 20yards to make it 1-1. Sensing the players revitalised mood, Colemanstown drove on. Keith Murphy gave a fine through ball to Paul Lally who shot on the turn only for the keeper to save well. Brian Sweeney was well positioned for the rebound only to be taken down in the box but the assertive Lee Murphy stepped up and confidently converted the resultant spot kick. Tuam fought back straight from the kick off but our rearguard of Lee Murphy, Gerard Warde, Ronan O’Neill & Ronan Carr were simply outstanding. With 20mins left Keith Connell was substituted following an ankle injury but with a quick reshuffle and the introduction of Kieran Dowd it did not disrupt Colemanstown’s momentum. Supersub Dowd made it 3-1 with a tap in at the back post with his first touch after his introduction. With 15mins to go Tuam threw everything at us and got one back in a rare defensive lapse of concentration. Back they came again just before full time when they clawed another goal to make it 3-3. There were few chances and no goals in extra time and so to dreaded penalties. We all know penalties are a terrible way to win or lose a game, you need the rub of the green. But luck or no luck the ever flexible & powerfully dominant Sean Murray came to the rescue once again as he did many times in the past. He oozed self belief & confidence and spread himself well to save 2 of the 4 spot kicks and so earned Colemanstown the right to advance to the next round of the Divisional Cup. Lads, well done to all involved.
