Colemanstown ‘A’ 0; Westport 0
Garry O’ Grady had to do without a litany of players in this Connaught Cup tie against a strong, professional Westport outfit, the winners of this competition 3 years ago. Colemanstown could have broken the deadlock inside the first half hour as they outclassed Westport in all sectors as they struggled to get out of their own half of the field. Colin O’Grady, Ray Moran, & Barry Donnellan had half chances, the latter blazing his attempt over the bar. In the 2nd half Westport came more into it and with a 1-on 1 chance, Joe Flannery saved well in the Colemanstown goal. Soon afterwards Colin O Grady failed to connect with a diving header from a Shane Clancy cross. Westport could have snatched a winner in the last few minutes but their effort whizzed across the face of goal much to the relief of the large Colemanstown contingent. Colemanstown can feel somewhat hard done-by as the players felt they could have snatched a win in extra time but the referee claimed a replay was necessary instead of extra time, which is far from the usual in any Cup tie following a draw match. Thanks to Frank & Bernie Burke for the welcome refreshments provided after the game. ‘A’ team make the long trip to Dublin on Saturday when they play Orchard Celtic of Cherry Orchard in the FAI Cup.
