U12 Girls SFAI Trophy. Colemanstown 0- 4 Moyne Villa. A 4 goal 2nd half blitz by Moyne Villa saw them march on to the next round of the SFAI Trophy competition under lights in Headford on Sunday evening. For Aislinn Murray, Ava Forde & Lauren O’Grady, it was their 2nd game of the day having played with the U13 Girls away to Loughrea in the league earlier in the morning. Both teams started the game in impressive fashion with Lauren O’Grady, Ava Forde & Lucy Burke Hardiman lording the show in midfield against a dogged Headford side. There were no clear cut chances for Colemanstown in the 1st half as Moyne Villa may have just about shaded the 1st half creating a couple of good chances but Emily Tuohy was exceptional in goal throughout the game. 0-0 stalemate at half time. Moyne Villa restarted the 2nd half in rampant mood with 3 quick goals by the same striker & the script was set for an easy 2nd half by the hosts. Colemanstown’s intensity waned in the 2nd half as bodies tired with the fast surface & the early morning U13 KO for some of our players. A rampant Moyne Villa added a 4th late on to add extra gloss to the final score. Colemanstown 0 -4 Moyne Villa. Match Report: Martina Donnellan
U18 Boys Connacht Cup: Colemanstown 3 – 4 Gurteen Celtic (Sligo). Colemanstown had plenty of the ball early on in their Connacht Cup home game vs Sligo side Gurteen Celtic on Sunday. The game started off at a frantic pace for our lads as there was no one on hand to finish an inviting cross into the box within seconds of the kick off while on 3mins Jonah Donnellan drew a diving save from the keeper. The opener came on 4mins when a long kick out from Fionn Flattery was added to by Tiarnan Proulx into the path of the pacy Tiarnan Lohan & he made no mistake with his one-on-one effort which he drilled past the advancing keeper. As Colemanstown bossed possession, Aironas found David Walsh on the edge of the box & his thunderous effort thundered off the crossbar. A fantastic passage of possession play involving Shane Duffy, Kyle Madden, Tiarnan Proulx & Jonah Donnellan saw Tiarnan Lohan turn on a 10c coin & his effort wasn’t too far over while the visiting keeper got the better of Kyle Madden in a race for a tap-in as his effort was drowned out. Madden again came close to adding No.2 after good play involving Duffy, Conor van Oosterhout & Proulx which saw David Walsh float into the box but Madden was inches away from the connection as Colemanstown showed great penetration. The game was over a half hour old before Gurteen Celtic garnered their first test of Fionn Flattery. A free kick from the half way line looped into the hands of the Colemanstown custodian. Fionn had to be alert moments later to make a good stop with a one-on-one effort; the only 2 real efforts mustered by the Sligo side in the first half. Just before the break Madden had another chance, this time from a corner when he stooped low to get a head on the ball but headed wide. 1-0 to Colemanstown at the break. The 2nd half recommenced in similar fashion to the 1st as Colemanstown scored within 30 seconds of the restart. Tiarnan Proulx’s through ball to Jonah Donnellan saw his right footed effort saved by the keeper, the rebound was swung in again , this time by Donnellan’s left foot which was finished to the net by a smashing nod from Kyle Madden. Our match reporter Roisin Proulx, flailed through this goal details: if only you could have heard the passion & detail in the reporting …. so if the facts are a bit lost in translation – blame me for boiling the kettle ! 13mins into the 2nd half and the game turned in the blink of an eye. Gurteen pulled one back as a long ball over the top, saw a slip up in our defence & their striker latched on to finish past the hapless Fionn in goal. Moments later they restored parity when a delivery from the right was swung into the box and their unmarked striker volleyed to the net in emphatic style. 2-2 & game on. As the Sligo side found rhythm & intensity the game turned on its head in another moment of madness as they turned 2-0 down to 3-2 up when they seized the initiative after Fionn was lobbed from a good distance out 18mins into the half. Colemanstown could have been in deeper trouble only for a super save by Fionn Flattery who came out to the edge of his box to make the save. David Walsh flashed an effort straight at the keeper as Colemanstown tried to find their feet again & build their confidence. They were rewarded on 72mins when Tiarnan Proulx worked hard to win a corner which was taken quickly by Aironas to David Walsh whose inviting cross bobbled around in the box, headed back in by Tiarnan Lohan & finished from close range by Tiarnan Proulx to make it 3-3 & richly deserved. Josh Buckley was introduced at this stage for the injured Ross Lally which saw the back four line out as Shane Duffy, David Walsh, Diarmuid Ryan & Josh Buckley for the final 15mins. The game then became scrappy as Aironas was red carded for a 2nd yellow. He was the glue at midfield from which much of our good play stemmed. However, we created some further chances through a Jonah Donnellan free kick from 25 yards which he fired over & Tiarnan Proulx saw his effort saved well. In a desperate attempt to salvage the win, Gurteen saw their piledriver thunder off the timber while Fionn’s strong right hand kept out another Gurteen close-range effort on 78mins. With 5mins to play Gurteen found the winner when a long ball found their winger & his deft touch altered the flight path of the ball in the direction of their striker who ran at pace & he made no mistake with a class finish. At this stage, Cathal Kennedy was introduced to the fray. With almost the last play a free kick awarded to Colemanstown on the half way line was taken by Fionn Flattery & in a crowded box, Diarmuid Ryan got a boot to it but it went agonisingly the wrong side of the post while immediately in the ensuing play Fionn made another point blank save. In the end time ran out on our boys in what was generally a super & exciting match produced by both sides. Final score: Colemanstown 3 – 4 Gurteen Celtic (Sligo). Kudos to the parents for the lovely goodies, tea/coffee & hospitality provided for the travelling team after the game. Match report: Martina Donnellan.
