Weekend Round-up: Part 1 – U12 Boys & Girls

Colemanstown Utd U12 A Boys 1 – 2 Boyle Celtic. Our U12A squad kicked off their SFAI National cup first round on Saturday against Boyle Celtic. The visitors were the ones that settled well early into the game and were 1-0 up after 5 mins with a well taken goal leaving Kerrill Walsh with no chance in goals. Colemanstown barely had time to settle before Boyle had the ball in the net again. The lads settled into the game from then on and our back 3 of Aaron Burke, George Costello and Ethan Monaghan were getting to grips with the attackers. Oisin Flannery was starting to get onto ball in midfield and fed a nice through ball to Evan Molloy but an injured Evan was unable to get to it. This saw the introduction of Mark Shaughnessy for Evan Molloy. Se Laffey and George Moore worked hard on the wings and Jack Grealish linked up well with them in front of the opposing defence. Frank Dunne and Matt Feeney were introduced for George Moore and Ethan. The boys pushed on and some nice work from Se Laffey, Oisin  Flannery and Jack Grealish threaded the ball through to Frank Dunne who grabbed a goal back. 2-1 at half time. James Kilkenny came on at half time for Jack Grealish and worked hard in midfield putting in tackles and setting up chances. By now Colemanstown were pushing hard for an equaliser and were dominating the second half. Jamie Lally Chris Burke and Phelim Flynn were introduced for Aaron, Mark and Se as we pushed and pushed for that equaliser limiting the Boyle boys to a few counter attacks but our defence dealt with it expertly. The crossbar and the post denied us on 2 occasions in the final 15 mins and eventually the final whistle came too soon for us. Final score from Colemanstown: Colemanstown Utd 1 – 2 Boyle Celtic.  We wish Boyle Celtic the best of luck in the next round.   Match Report: Adrian Burke

Colemanstown U12 Girls 5 – 6 Athenry.  We welcomed Athenry to a wet & windy Colemanstown this morning for our first league encounter against neighbours Athenry. It was the Colemanstown girls who started out strong with Lucy Burke Hardiman, Holly Mellody & Ava Forde putting the pressure on Athenry. The opener arrived early on when Lucy Burke Hardiman whipped in a cross which was finished by Lauren O’Grady.  After this Athenry pinned Colemanstown back well as they capitalised on wind advantage. Athenry then levelled matters from a corner to make it 1 apiece. The visitors scored from 2 more quick corners which were scrambled over the line, a super long range effort which found the net & a superb individual goal following a super individual run from midfield to make it 5-1 and at this stage Athenry were well on top & cruising as half time just couldn’t come quick enough for our young ladies to regroup. Colemanstown re-appeared for the 2nd half a different outfit also assisted by the breeze. Our defense stood strong from the off with Aislinn Murray the leader at the back, shouting instructions to her team mates Jade Devaney, Helia Costello, Ciara Maybin & Faye Ryan while Emily Tuohy was also to the fore in keeping Athenry from adding to their scoreline. Lucy Burke Hardiman was now instrumental in play & scored to claw one back. Colemanstown now had the upper hand & with Ava Forde winning the ball in the left wing, she skipped by 2 defenders & whacked the ball into the top corner & suddenly we were looking at a 5-3 ball game. For the remainder of the half, Colemanstown found themselves with more possession & looked far more dangerous. Ava Forde claimed her brace soon after when she dispossessed her opponent with great help from Ruby Lally and another sublime finish found the top corner. There was to be more late drama as Erin Holmes on the right side found Ava Forde again whose cross into the box was finished by Grace Flynn to make it a mighty 5-5 in a serious comeback. With not much time left, it was Athenry who secured a 6-5 victory with an unfortunate OG from a corner which deflected off one of our players. It would have been a superb comeback had the girls salvaged a draw. That said it was a super performance thanks in the main to a dominant 2nd half display.  Match report: Barry Forde

Barna na Forbacha 2- 4 Colemanstown United U12B Boys. Our U12B team travelled to sunny Barna on Saturday for our first away game of the league.  With a strong panel of 18 players all rearing to go we were in for a tough challenge from a lively Barna side.  Despite getting the perfect start after 5mins when a long range effort from James Vignoles hit the top corner of the net, Colemanstown were under a lot of pressure for the following 15mins of the first half.  Barna who were aided with the slight wind advantage piled on the pressure and were rewarded with two goals to take the lead 2-1.  Colemanstown emptied the bench after 20mins and used the panel to full advantage.  Immediately Barna were being pressed from the top and eventually after a number of great chances Daniel Kelly converted to the net from close range after a great corner from Dara Ryan.  All square at half time 2-2.  Colemanstown upped the intensity from the start of the second half and created numerous great chances to score but for some great shot stopping from the Barna goalkeeper. A brilliant effort from Cathal Burns from long range ended up in the roof of the net and shortly after Conor Finnerty converted from the edge of the box after Barna’s keeper and defence kept out previous attempts, but could not fully clear their lines.  Colemanstown were now on top and with some great passing moves were creating more and mores opportunities but unlucky not to extend their lead.  Once again the bench was emptied and 8 pairs of fresh legs were on the pitch to see off the Barna challenge and secure the 2nd league win for Colemanstown.  Both Avey Mahon and Matthew Hansbury played very well in goal: In defence Iarla Thompson, Oisin Kelly and Senan Prolux performed very well and set up some good attacks.  Eugene Kelly, Igor Ziolek and James Flahery were also gallant in defence. Our midfield line again was on top with 3 goals from Cathal Burns, James  Vignoles and Conor Finnerty and also great running from Eoghan Burke, Matthew Ruane and Shane Broderick. Up front Andrew Davoren, Dara Ryan and Eoghan Kelly created great chances with Daniel Kelly scoring also. An all-round strong performance as we look forward to our next game at home in two weeks.  Match report: Peter Kelly
