Ashley plays puck as only U13 Boys saw weekend football in SFAI Trophy

It’s easy wrap up this weekends soccer action as only 1 game went ahead on a weekend when Storm Ashley wreaked havoc on all Sunday fixtures. The Galway FA had rightfully made the right call of a blanket ban on fixtures given the hazardous conditions on Sunday.

On Saturday our U13 Boys welcomed South East Sligo side Arrow Harps to Colemanstown. From the moment the visitors disembarked from the bus, our lads knew this would be a tough one!  The opposition were a much more physical & stronger outfit  & the writing was on the wall from the off. Within 7 mins Colemanstown were 2-0 down having conceded a header from a corner & an early penalty. The visitors stepped it up a notch or two & piled on another 3 goals by 25mins. Colemanstown pulled 1 back before the break as George Costello won the ball in defence & his through ball found Oisin Flannery who squared across to Thomas Kennedy & he finished from close range past the advancing keeper.  5-1 to the visitors at the break. The 2nd half continued in the same vein, with Arrow Harps garnering more momentum & were certainly on the front foot. Another burst from them led to another goal soon after the restart. Colemanstown settled though & got a better grip of the game. In this spell, we pulled it back to 6-2 as Oisin Flannery latched onto Ritchie O’Conor’s defence splitting pass to & placed the ball superbly into the bottom right corner.  Harps showed great composure in possession as they slipped in for another brace. However our boys drew the last applause after Thomas Kennedy’s hard work in midfield, sent a ball across the box where Mark Shaughnessy was lurking on the back post & he finished with his right foot, with not too long left on the clock. 3-8 was final score from Colemanstown as the Sligo side deserved the right to advance to the next round of the SFAI Trophy competition.  It was a tough day for our youngsters as Arrow Harps demonstrated they were well up for this challenge.  Match Report: Martina Donnellan
