Good B team display but not quite good enough

Our B team took on table toppers NUIG who have been scoring goals for fun up until now and hence this was always going to be a tough one for the B team. A totally re-shuffled Colemanstown team however, battled bravely inch for inch forcing NUIG to rush their attempts at goal and shoot from distance for most of the game. Colemanstown playing against a stiff breeze in the first half conceded a sloppy goal 15mins in when the defence failed to clear from a corner. They battled well after that however as Damian Fahy, Robert Hughes, Barry Forde, Gary Broderick & Damian Mannion knuckled down. Colemanstown had only a few half chances to shout about in the first half as the breeze was a telling factor. As the second half resumed Mark Kirby & Martin Walsh had the best chances for an equaliser with the latter going close with his free kick which whizzed over the timber. NUIG scored a second with 20mins to go when Colemanstown were caught on the break and the striker dispatched well in a one-on-one effort with Tom Broderick. With 7 mins left on the clock Steven Broderick gave Colemanstown a lifeline when his attempted cross into the box was poorly handled by the College custodian and the ball dribbled over the line for a fortuitous goal. Colemanstown pressed hard in the last few minutes but alas could not find an equaliser and so it finished 2-1. All in all it was a good all round effort and the few pints of green beer afterwards were well earned.
